Global Innovation Fund
The Global Innovation Fund is a non-profit investment fund that supports social innovations targeting people living on less than US$5 per day. It focuses on innovations that can improve livelihoods, strengthen markets, and scale sustainably.
GIF uses a tiered financing model. It provides pilot grants for early-stage innovations. For more developed solutions, it offers test, transition, or scale-up funding. GIF deploys grants, loans, and risk-capital instruments, depending on the innovation’s stage and potential impact.
In Kenya, GIF invests in social enterprises and agribusinesses with scalable solutions. For example, it supported Keep It Cool (KIC), a cold-chain operator helping smallholder farmers and fisherfolk reduce post-harvest loss. GIF’s funding enabled KIC to expand solar-powered refrigeration and logistics, improving produce quality and market access.
GIF also works with entrepreneurs, non-profits, and research institutions that apply evidence-based innovations in agriculture, food security, and climate-smart solutions. Its approach ensures interventions are not only effective but also scalable across rural communities.
Access to GIF funding is through an online application portal. Eligible organizations must demonstrate potential for social impact, financial viability, and scalability. GIF also provides advisory support and monitoring to ensure innovations achieve measurable outcomes.
Consequently, GIF plays a vital role in supporting agricultural innovation and inclusive agribusiness growth in Kenya. By combining flexible financing, technical assistance, and market-driven solutions, it enables smallholder farmers and agribusinesses to improve incomes, adopt new technologies, and strengthen resilience.
