Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA)
Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA) Kenya began operations in 2017, working with both private and public sector partners to address bottlenecks in smallholder value chains and promote sustainable food systems. The organization focuses on increasing productivity and income for smallholder farmers while developing self-sustaining Farmer Service Centres (FSCs). These centres provide agricultural products, technical support, and market access through a network of rural agri-entrepreneurs.
FtMA Kenya has established over 1,329 FSCs that serve more than 296,000 farmers across the country. Through these centres, farmers access inputs, training, and post-harvest support. The network also builds trust between smallholders and other value chain actors, which strengthens commercial viability and encourages private sector investment.
The organization has aggregated over 54,000 metric tonnes of crops, with a total value exceeding $21 million. Its services through FSCs contribute approximately $16.8 million in support to farmers. FtMA’s programs include partnerships with technology providers, soil nutrition companies, and mechanization services to improve productivity and efficiency. Innovative pilots, such as the Apeel avocado shelf-life extension project, demonstrate its commitment to introducing solutions that increase farmers’ incomes and reduce post-harvest losses.
FtMA Kenya’s initiatives prioritize smallholder empowerment, market integration, and sustainable agricultural practices. By combining capacity building, technological support, and market access, the organization enhances livelihoods, strengthens food systems, and promotes resilient, commercially viable smallholder farming across Kenya.
