Digifarm

DigiFarm is an agritech platform operated by Safaricom, launched in 2017, designed to empower smallholder farmers across Kenya by offering an integrated suite of agricultural services via mobile phone. The platform provides access to quality farm inputs, credit and financing, farm-management advice, mechanisation services, market linkages, and, in some cases, crop insurance.

Through a simple USSD menu (*283#), a smartphone app, or call-centre support, farmers register on DigiFarm and create a digital profile of their farm. This enables tailored agronomic guidance and allows them to order certified seeds, fertilisers, agro-chemicals, or livestock feeds through partner input-suppliers — often at subsidised or discounted rates.

DigiFarm also connects farmers to buyers via its marketplace component (DigiSoko), offering a reliable route to sell produce post-harvest. Buyers can pay through mobile money (M-Pesa), and farmers receive digital records of transactions which build their credit profile and facilitate access to future financing.

Beyond inputs and markets, DigiFarm delivers farm-management support: weather and climate advisories, planting/harvest planning, extension guidance for crops and livestock, and soil/farm-planning tools. The platform targets smallholder farmers, including those with small parcels of land, seeking to improve yields and farm income via affordable, accessible, and context-appropriate services.

Since inception, DigiFarm has registered over 1.4 million farmers, of whom a substantial portion remain active users. Its approach of bundling digital finance, input supply, advisory services, and market access in one platform marks it as a leading example of how mobile-based solutions can drive agricultural transformation, enhance food security, and support livelihoods for smallholders across Kenya.
