Dairy Goat Association of Kenya (DGAK)
The Dairy Goat Association of Kenya (DGAK) is a national non-profit that empowers small-scale dairy goat farmers and strengthens rural livelihoods. Established in 1994, DGAK emerged from the Integrated Small Livestock Project, implemented by the Ministry of Livestock Development with GTZ. The association addresses the shortage of quality breeding stock and supports farmers with structured programs.
DGAK runs breeding programs that cross local Kenyan goats with German Alpine genetics. These efforts have produced over 200,000 improved goats, with more than 96,000 registered in the Kenya Stud Book. To reach farmers effectively, DGAK trains farmer-based service providers and multipliers who distribute high-quality bucks and does to communities, ensuring better herd productivity.
The association also delivers hands-on training in goat husbandry, breeding management, record keeping, and enterprise development. Farmers learn to improve herd health, enhance milk production, and explore value-added products. Additionally, DGAK emphasizes good governance, professionalism, teamwork, and inclusivity in all its programs.
DGAK operates in Nyeri, Murang’a, Embu, Kirinyaga, Nakuru, and Western Kenya, directly supporting thousands of farmers. By combining practical knowledge, genetic improvement, and enterprise support, the association strengthens the dairy goat value chain. Consequently, farmers increase incomes, improve food security, and build sustainable livelihoods. Over three decades, DGAK has become a trusted partner for smallholder farmers, transforming dairy goat farming across Kenya
