CGIAR
The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is a global research partnership transforming food, land, and water systems for a sustainable and resilient future. From 2025 to 2030, CGIAR implements its 2030 Strategy by combining the expertise of all CGIAR Research Centers. This partnership tackles major global challenges, including climate change, rural poverty, gender inequality, environmental degradation, poor-quality diets, and risks from conflict and fragility.
For over 50 years, CGIAR has led thousands of projects worldwide. It operates through eight Science Programs, a Scaling for Impact Program, and four Accelerators. The Science Programs focus on climate-smart agriculture, sustainable animal and aquatic food systems, resilient crops and livestock, multifunctional landscapes, improved nutrition, and effective policy solutions. In addition, Accelerators and capacity-sharing initiatives ensure innovations are inclusive, gender-sensitive, and scalable. As a result, smallholder farmers gain access to technologies, knowledge, and markets more effectively.
CGIAR has measurable impact on global agriculture. Between 2022 and 2024, over 20 million farmers benefited from 471 innovations across 62 countries. These projects influenced US$3.3 billion in third-party investments and guided 315 policy and institutional reforms. Moreover, CGIAR’s genebanks conserve over 700,000 crop accessions, supporting climate-resilient and sustainable farming worldwide.
By working closely with governments, research institutions, NGOs, and the private sector, CGIAR turns scientific discoveries into practical, locally adapted solutions. It combines digital tools, advanced breeding techniques, ecosystem management, and participatory approaches. Consequently, livelihoods improve, food security strengthens, and resilient, equitable, and sustainable agricultural systems are built globally.
