About

Balambala Camel Milk Producers is one of Kenya’s leading camel milk cooperatives. Based in Garissa County, the organization brings together more than one thousand pastoralists involved in camel production and milk marketing. Its main animal products include fresh camel milk, fermented camel milk (susa), sour camel milk, and camel milk yoghurt. The cooperative has become an important player in the commercialization of camel milk within northern Kenya.

Fresh camel milk forms the foundation of the cooperative’s operations. Members supply milk through organized collection systems that support quality control and efficient marketing. In addition, the cooperative produces fermented camel milk, commonly known as susa, as well as sour camel milk and flavoured yoghurt products. These products help diversify income streams while meeting growing consumer demand for nutritious camel-based foods.

The cooperative operates within one of Kenya’s most important camel-producing regions. Aggregating milk from pastoralist communities, it creates a structured market that improves returns for producers. Furthermore, the organization provides training on milk hygiene, processing, and value addition. These initiatives help improve product quality while reducing post-harvest losses.

Beyond milk marketing, the cooperative contributes to nutrition and food security programs within Garissa County. Its products are supplied to households, schools, and health institutions. Moreover, the organization promotes environmental conservation and sustainable pastoralism through community-based initiatives. This broader approach strengthens both livelihoods and ecosystem resilience.

As Kenya’s camel milk industry continues to expand, Balambala Camel Milk Producers and Marketing Cooperative Society remains an important contributor to the value chain. Its focus on fresh and value-added camel milk products creates economic opportunities for pastoralists while increasing access to nutritious dairy alternatives.
