Agriculture and Food Authority(AFA)

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) is a state corporation established under the Agriculture and Food Authority Act No. 13 of 2013. It unites Kenya’s main crop regulatory institutions, including the Coffee Board, Kenya Sugar Board, Horticultural Crops Development Authority, Cotton Development Authority, Pyrethrum Board, Coconut Development Authority, and Sisal Board. AFA regulates, develops, and promotes crop value chains across the country.

AFA oversees the entire crop value chain, from production and processing to storage, transportation, marketing, and trade. The Authority enforces national standards and best practices while encouraging innovation and the use of modern farming technologies. It also collects crop production data, monitors trends, and registers stakeholders to support planning and market growth.

The Authority advises national and county governments on policy, regulatory compliance, levy structures, and sectoral planning. Its directorates focus on coffee, food crops, horticulture, nuts and oil crops, miraa, pyrethrum, fiber, and other industrial crops.

Farmers, cooperatives, processors, exporters, and county governments benefit from AFA’s services. The Authority ensures fair competition, promotes food safety, and improves access to markets. By combining regulation, advisory support, and development initiatives, AFA strengthens Kenya’s agribusiness sector, enhances crop quality, fosters innovation, and contributes to economic growth and improved livelihoods.
