Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC)

The Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) is a state corporation established in 1965 to promote commercial agriculture and support farmers across Kenya. Initially, it facilitated land transfer from European settlers to local farmers and managed quality livestock breeding programs. In 1986, its mandate expanded under Cap 444 of the Act of Parliament to include the development and execution of agricultural schemes nationwide.

ADC operates state farms and estates that produce key crops such as maize, potatoes, wheat, coffee, and citrus. It also maintains livestock studs for dairy, beef, and dual-purpose breeds. The corporation supplies quality seeds, seedlings, animal feeds, and offers artificial insemination services to improve livestock genetics. Its Livestock Genetics Centre, regional farms, and seed multiplication projects provide critical inputs that boost productivity, food security, and sustainability.

The corporation promotes technology transfer from research institutions to farmers through training, demonstrations, and extension services. Farmers adopt modern irrigation techniques, climate-resilient crops, and improved livestock practices. As a result, yields increase, post-harvest losses reduce, and incomes improve.

ADC actively engages smallholder farmers, cooperatives, and agribusinesses to strengthen value chains, support market access, and encourage sustainable farming. Its operations span Kitale, Nakuru, the Coastal Belt, and Garissa, covering crop production, livestock breeding, and irrigation initiatives.

Through production, research, training, and market facilitation, ADC continues to advance Kenya’s agricultural sector. It improves farmer livelihoods, enhances food security, and contributes to the country’s economic growth, ensuring sustainable and modern agricultural practices reach communities nationwide.
