Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF)

The Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF) is a leading development finance institution. It supports private-sector agribusinesses, climate-smart technologies, and renewable energy enterprises across Sub-Saharan Africa. Established in 2008, AECF provides catalytic financing through grants and concessional loans, usually ranging from USD 100,000 to over USD 1.5 million. Moreover, it offers technical assistance, investment-readiness support, capacity building, and gender inclusion advisory services.

In Kenya, the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund has backed numerous agribusinesses that strengthen value chains and improve smallholder livelihoods. For example, Best Tropical Fruits Ltd works with farmers to enhance fruit quality and expand processing capacity. Similarly, Afritec Seeds Ltd. commercialised high-yield hybrid rice seeds for small-scale farmers. In addition, Josiche General Traders Ltd encourages the cultivation of soya beans and grain aggregation to support animal feed production. Furthermore, iShamba delivers farm advisory services digitally, helping farmers access timely information.

Through these initiatives, AECF enables farmers to access quality inputs, adopt modern practices, and connect to markets more effectively. The fund especially prioritizes enterprises that empower women and youth, promote climate resilience, and drive inclusive agricultural growth. Applications are accepted through periodic thematic calls. Each application undergoes rigorous screening and due diligence before approval.

Consequently, AECF has supported over 200 enterprises to date. Its combined approach of financing, technical support, and inclusive business models continues to drive innovation, sustainability, and economic transformation in Kenya’s agribusiness sector. By linking smallholders to markets and resources, AECF creates lasting social and economic impact.
